Test Driving The All-New 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

Few vehicles are designed to go to the places and do the things the Land Cruiser can. Proactive Driving Assist can automatically add subtle braking or steering to help you keep a safe distance from other vehicles. You might like it as long as you know what this technology is and what it does. Every 2024 Land Cruiser gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as standard equipment.

Rear and Center Locking Differentials

While the design is common, the 1958 and “Land Cruiser” trim level differ greatly in terms of interior materials, features and technology. While the “Land Cruiser” has padded SofTex simulated leather on the dash, doors and center console leg rests, the 1958 has rock-hard plastic. We love the sturdy, throwback gray upholstery, but this is still an SUV costing over $56,000, and considering what you’ll likely get in a comparably priced Toyota 4Runner, let alone a Jeep Grand Cherokee, this interior just seems cheap. Again, no issues with the “Land Cruiser,” which looks and feels as upmarket as its price suggests. The integrated electric motor supplies immediate torque for rock crawling, and the brake and accelerator pedals are easy to modulate when creeping along without Crawl Control.

The 70 series is also still marketed in Australia as 4-door wagon, 2-door 'Troop Carrier', 2-door cab-chassis and 4-door cab-chassis. This is a profoundly different SUV than the last Land Cruiser, for better and for worse. It’s a lot cheaper, for one, but that’s because it’s a smaller, less sophisticated off-roader that may indeed be less likely to survive 30 years of hard life somewhere in the Sahara. Land Cruiser’s 2400W power outlet integrates the ability to charge and operate your essentials wherever your off-road journey takes you.

Toyota Land Cruiser Information

There was a period of time where even the most robust, off-road-capable SUVs looked like round, bulbous hunks of metal, worlds away from their boxy, retro predecessors. Thankfully, Toyota realized its mistake, providing us with an all-new Land Cruiser after a three-year hiatus in the United States. Additionally, Toyota is also looking "Beyond Zero" to create and provide greater value by continuing to diligently seek ways to improve lives and society for the future.

What are the Land Cruiser safety ratings and driver assistance features?

Here we sought the expertise of Dakar Rally champion Akira Miura, no stranger to driving under pressure in extreme environments. It was an extremely difficult task, but has allowed customers, in all corners of the world the chance to participate in the journey toward carbon neutrality. Reliability and durability are built-in, and performance over rough terrain is on par with the flagship Land Cruiser 300.

I could sit comfortably behind myself in the new Land Cruiser with a finger-width to spare between knees and front seat back. Headroom is more abundant than the 4Runner’s, while the seatback reclines generously. Cargo space suffers due to the hybrid system’s battery pack that raises the floor by roughly a hand-width, leaving a small, full-width bin at the cargo area’s trailing edge.

The Power of Choice

Emergency Driving Stop is available when using the Land Cruiser's lane-centering assist. It detects when a driver is no longer responsive or paying attention to the road and is designed to bring the SUV to a safe stop. That is helpful in cases where a driver suffers a medical emergency or falls asleep. Though my test vehicle did not have the Multi-Terrain Monitor upgrade with the off-roading cameras, outward visibility is good.

The Light Duty Series has tended to shift toward high-end and luxury models as the generations have evolved. With the spirit of rebuilding the model, they created a simple and sturdy vehicle that can be trusted by customers to fulfill their lifestyle choices and practical needs. The 100 models were fitted with a slightly wider chassis,[57] independent front suspension (IFS) and two new engines. The change to IFS was a first for a Land Cruiser, and was made (in combination with rack-and-pinion steering) to improve on-road handling.

Most of those figures would be better than the last Land Cruiser, but not quite as good as the current 4Runner. All told, the Land Cruiser is one of the better SUVs for actually off-roading, largely because it’s a literal SUV, with body-on-frame construction. The key differentiator between Land Cruiser versions is the presence of the new manually disconnecting stabilizer bar that improves wheel articulation.

Also announced today is the heavy-duty Land Cruiser "70", which will make its return to Japan this coming winter as a regular model in the range. This will result in all three Land Cruiser series again being available in Japan. The 70 series is also still being marketed in the Middle East as a 2-door and 4-door version as an SUV, and a 2-door and 4-door version as a pickup, and it is very popular there along with the regular Land Cruiser. Everyone knew the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser wouldn’t be gone for long when Toyota announced its departure after the 2021 model year.

Land Cruiser’s full-time 4-wheel-drive system provides power continuously to the front and rear axles to improve traction and stability on various surfaces. An electronically controlled 2-speed transfer case allows you to select the right amount of torque for your driving conditions. Thanks to supportive cushions that sit high off the floor, everybody should be comfortable. The 1958 Edition has a manual driver's seat height adjuster, but other models feature power adjustments. My test vehicle had 1958 Edition trim, commemorating the first Land Cruiser in the U.S. with retro front styling, fabric-wrapped seats, basic in-cabin technology, and a short list of standard amenities. It had no options and wore a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $57,345, including the $1,395 destination charge.

You can position the driver's seat high for an excellent view forward over the low and flat hood, and it's easy to tell where the Cruiser's front corners are. Fortunately, the trail Toyota chose for testing wasn't too treacherous, so the tires weren't an issue. Still, the drive proved challenging enough to put a wheel in the air and to lean the SUV over at about a 25-degree angle, and it required 4Lo and both locking differentials to traverse some of the terrain. The one-year-only First Edition (pictured below in beige) combines the round headlights with the rest of the upgrade Land Cruiser fascia. Judging by internet response and my fellow attendees at the press launch, the retro round headlights are greatly preferred.

The time with the new Toyota was restricted to off-highway, so I don't have any comments on its road manners. It is smaller, more affordable, and gets better gas mileage than the previous-generation model. However, it attempts to retain all the off-roading talent you expect from a Land Cruiser, combined with the latest high-tech gadgetry from the Toyota parts bin.

The Land Cruiser obviously isn’t as lux inside, has five seats only and is exclusively offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid powertrain that gets laughably better fuel economy than the old Land Cruiser as well as the GX. It also doesn't offer the GX Overtrail's trick KDSS automatically disconnecting stabilizer bars, but counters with a manually disconnecting bar that contributes to the Land Cruiser living up to its off-roading heritage. In North America, the Land Cruiser 200 series is offered with one trim level and engine, the 5.7 L 3UR-FE V8 petrol engine producing 284 kW (386 PS; 381 hp) and 544 N⋅m (401 lb⋅ft) of torque channeled through a six-speed automatic.

Body roll isn’t excessive, steering is precise with appropriate weighting (if there’s some added in Sport mode, I didn’t really notice), and the well-sorted damping didn’t have the body bounding about in mid-corner bumps during our drive. There are the telltale wiggles and jiggles over bumps, and much like the mechanically related Sequoia, I would suspect that the available 20-inch wheels may amplify that sensation. Toyota describes that entry-level “Land Cruiser 1958” as a “blank canvas” for more dedicated off-roaders who want to make their rig their own. Seats are covered in a sturdy fabric, door and dash surfaces are rock-hard plastic, frills are kept to a minimum and options are scarce. You can’t get the new manually disconnecting stabilizer bar, skid plates or roof rails, including the latter as an accessory.
